I had been wondering about how Beetle Bailey and his sister, Lois Flagston from Hi & Lois compared in age since it was never told in either comic, and I had previously come up with the theory in one of my Baby Cartoon Mom charts: Lois is younger than Beetle, since Hi & Lois is a spinoff of Beetle Bailey, and as to the age, Beetle Bailey started in September 4, 1950, while Hi & Lois started on October 18, 1954, so Beetle would be four or five years older than Lois would be. Just a theory that used technical facts to an advantage.
After I had drawn an image of Baby Lois hugging 5-year old Beetle's leg and I was trying to determine what to put in the background, I emailed Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker out of curiosity about who the older sibling was. I was incredibly surprised to get his response back:
"You've done a lot more thinking than I have on Beetle's relationship with Lois. I have no idea who is older but now that you bring up the subject I would assume that Lois is older because she has 4 children and Beetle hasn't even got married yet. Okay?"
While I could see his point with that, I still didn't think that was the best possible reason, since that could have easily been countered with the notion that just because Lois was married with four children, that didn't automatically mean she was older, that could have just meant she had started a family sooner, while settling down never really crossed Beetle's mind. Upon further questioning, Mort mentioned that he seemed to think of Lois like his older sister, who was ten years older than him, and he also told that he was making a Sunday page about Lois visiting Beetle at Camp Swampy. While I am looking forward to that, I'm still sticking by my idea for the time being, because I think it's cuter.
Also, ~80sComicstripfan (
) wanted to see a few different images based around the concept of Young Beetle and Baby Lois, and she suggested a way to do the image of Lois hugging Beetle's leg I had done earlier, by depicting the background as "red with hearts to symbolize Lois' love for Beetle." Might be a little too cutesy, I know, but hey, it's still a very sweet idea, nonetheless.
So yeah, here's the concept drawing I did for that image. I'd like some feedback for it, to hear what you think.

Actually, according to 'Lois and Hi' strip several years ago, Lois is the oldest of the two (it had a picture of them together as kids). Still it is a great idea.
